Can this towel stop wrinkles?
Orange County entrepreneurs Mike Murray and Brad Mason have created a company, Ra Brands in Costa Mesa to make and sell an alternative: the Ra Towel, made of a light-weight, patent pending fabric that he says blocks 99.9% of UVA/UVB radiation.
Hang around the beaches, ball parks and swimming pools and you’ll notice people wearing wide-brimmed hats or the oh-so-attractive T-shirts or towels draped over their heads.
But these don’t block skin damaging ultraviolet rays.Well, there’s always white zinc oxide on the nose.
"The Ra Towel provides a great alternative to conventional lotions that may clog pores or irritate the skin," Murray says.
Murray is a practical guy, knowing that tanners just can’t resist getting some sun exposure that that golden California look. “But we recommend that they use the towel for a while, take it off a while."
"It’s washable and certified to keep its blocking agents for at ra-towels-1least 40 washes," says Murray, who’s a serial entrepreneur. A past venture is a home theater installation firm.
The 20-inch by 14-inch towel sells for about $21.95 in specialty shops and tanning salons. Murray says that Ra Brands will donate a portion of revenues to the National Melanoma Project, which was initiated in 2003 with a group of UCI medical students interested in teaching local teens about skin cancer.
